Family Sponsorship in Canada

Family sponsorship is designed around an eligible family relationship and the responsibilities of a qualifying sponsor. It is not a points-ranked Express Entry application.

The sponsor and the person being sponsored have different requirements. Both sides must provide complete, accurate information, and the applicant remains subject to the applicable immigration and admissibility assessment.

Who may be sponsored

Canadian rules identify specific family classes and relationship definitions. Spouses, common-law partners, dependent children and certain other relatives are treated under different requirements. A relationship label used socially may not be enough without meeting the legal definition.

The sponsor’s role

A sponsor must satisfy the current eligibility rules and accept a formal undertaking. Prior sponsorships, financial obligations, status, residence and other circumstances can affect eligibility.

The applicant’s record

The applicant generally provides identity, civil-status, background and relationship information, along with police, medical and biometric steps where required. Past applications and family composition should be disclosed accurately.

Relationship evidence

Evidence should reflect the real history of the relationship. Its form will vary: communication, visits, shared decisions, finances, household arrangements and recognition by family or friends may be relevant, but a checklist should not be manufactured to imitate another couple.

Legal assistance and scope

Where authorized and retained, assistance may include reviewing sponsor eligibility, identifying evidence gaps, organizing the application and responding to concerns. It cannot replace truthful first-hand evidence from the family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is family sponsorship part of Express Entry?

No. It is a separate family-class process with different legal requirements.

Does marriage automatically guarantee approval?

No. The sponsor and applicant must meet the applicable rules, and the relationship and application evidence are assessed.

Can a common-law partner be sponsored?

Potentially, if the relationship meets the current legal definition and is supported by appropriate evidence.

What is a sponsorship undertaking?

It is a binding commitment by the sponsor. Its duration and consequences depend on the sponsored relationship and current rules.
